Description
Lately I have been working on a series of tutorials for IMAGINEFX by Future publishing. This artwork was made specifically for the Gown Painting and Decorating Tutorial.
The tutorial covers the detailed process of painting the whole dress, starting with a basic sketch to coloring and decorating with lace and embroidery.
So... if you want to see how this was done, check out IMAGINEFX Issue 3!
The image was done in Painter 7 with some aid from Photoshop CS2 (stone textures); around a week of hard work

Concept:Average |
Technical Skill:Very strong |
Impact/impression:Strong |
Pros:Those folds in the dress are excellent
Great figure as a whole Interesting composition And did I mention the dress... Cons:The clouds are a bit scratchy and intrude on the foreground. A more muted background would have been better
Not sure what the red stuff is bottom left, but it doesn't seem to belong The top crow looks to be infront of the woman whilst its perch (and the lower crow) seems to recede behind her, Escher-like. This is probably because the top of its perch is lighter coloured. Overall opinion/feedback:Wonderful artwork as usual, but you have a few issues with elements competing for attention +9/10

Firstly the fingers/claws. They don't really look like ones. I can feel that they are not strong. They look as if they were made of rubber or plasticine. Or as if the real nails were covered with skin. Female figure skaters sometimes wear "tights" that go all the way down, covering the boots. That's what this looks like. It totally ruins the effect.
Secondly the upper left arm is waaaaay too long. Seeing her stand like this I can only assume her shoulders are at the same level. I can see even without comparing that there's sth wrong about the arms. And there is. The easiest way to check this is take a pencil and measure. Unless her left arm is also made of plasticine, it's definatelly too long
The detail is very impressive, but it' just doesn't feel like the embroidery is "in" the material. It look's more like a ready-made embroidery sewed onto the material. It just doesn't feel real. The lace on the other hand looks poor in comparison to the embroidery. Btw I was kind of trying to do the same with the embroidery in a painting I'm currently working on, but I gave up, too much work, and it makes other stuff look poor. (Here is a first and a last try of mine, looks dredfull I know
And last - there is no neck, or at least it looks weird with a jaw finished like that.
I know it looks like I have more crits than cons, but it's not like that. After all it takes more time to explain why you dislike sth than why you like it. That's the way it is. So: it's a really great work, but there are some elements that could be corrected.
Cheers
